Japan is one of the countries and regions in the world with the lowest number of new infections. For example, Thailand has had over 9,000 outbreaks, and the United Kingdom, which has abolished restrictions, has had over 10,000.

A state of emergency will be declared starting July 12, which is quite different from the lockdown/martial law that we had in the US and Europe. There will be no restrictions on going out and no fines will be issued.

Border enforcement measures to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

1. Denial of permission to entry

Foreigners who have stayed in the following countries/regions within 14 days prior to landing in Japan will be denied landing unless there are “special circumstances”. However, if you arrive in Japan from an area that is not a denied landing zone, after passing through the following denied landing zone for refueling or transit purposes (except when entering Japan at a transit point), you will not be considered to have a history of stay in the denied landing zone.

3. PCR test and isolation request

All entrants (including Japanese nationals) are required to submit an inspection certificate within 72 hours prior to departure. Those who are unable to submit the inspection certificate will not be allowed to enter the country. Furthermore, entrants (including Japanese nationals) are required to undergo an inspection at the time of entry, wait at a place designated by the quarantine station chief (home, etc.) for 14 days, and not use public transportation in Japan.
